The PLC (computerised sizing) takes the human error out of sawing
Accuracy
The many portable sawmills over the years have given the industry a bad name when talking about accuracy. Not because the machines are in accurate but simply due to the very manual nature of sawing.
Some machines require lowering the frame from two ends, causing mis-communication from the sawyer. Some machines require lowering and shifting sideways through 4 independent measuring devices further creating a larger room for error. Other machines require the sawyer to Reset a dial to zero by line of site and then set the indicator at a point by site. These are all variables which contribute to in accuracy.
The other aspect is human fatigue. At the end of the day, because you are in this to make money production is one of the largest factors. Sizing comes in to play when considering production. You just want to cut timber rather than fiddling around with sizing, it takes time to get it accurate and in some cases this is compromised.
The final element is the sawmill it's self. Most machines use chains to position the head. Chains have stretch, to be truly accurate they must always be under tension for the best results. Moving back and forth really does effect accuracy, especially when considering weight distribution. The head may be positioned at the far end of the tracks or to the far right of the tracks and vice versa the next drop.
The PLC
The PLC is designed by Glen Meade of Tailored Controls LTD. It integrates with our sawmill seamlessly and offers so many benefits (as discussed above). It has been well thought out and is fully upgrade able through a simple USB port. Glen has spent a lot of attention both in its design, wiring and durability. So much so that we now offer this unit as standard with all machines.
After spending enough time on the sawmills using these, it can not be argued to sell a machine with out one. Standing back from the timber packets the difference is obvious. After all the quality of your timber is the single most important factor. Its your name at the end of the day.
To further compliment the PLC we have opted to remove all chains from our machine and use hydraulics driven by proportional valves to give even further accuracy.
The PLC system is truly an amazing system. Its easy to use, maintains accuracy, increases production and is built to last. Each component of the unit is replaceable should a problem arise.
It has many layers of backup options. As an example; operation can be performed on the touch screen should the buttons fail. Should the computer fail the buttons will still be able to operate the saw.
These are pictures of the internal wiring showing the quality of design and assembly. Glen has had his own chips printed to further reduce the wiring required within the unit.
It would be wrong to sell our sawmills without this unit!
